[22] “And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,” — Ephesians 1:22 NIV
While growing up, I’ve heard and seen time and time again how many people work to buy material possessions, acquire lands, marry husbands or wives, raise children and build houses. And sometimes, I get asked, “What’s your lot in life?” It seems everyone is doing it, so others expect me to follow them. But I’ve understood that life isn’t in the abundance of possessions, just as Jesus said in Luke 12:15. This isn’t to boast about my life, but to share my testimony of how God killed the pursuit of material possessions in my heart as follow Him.
Life is about purpose, and every possession we get must link to it, or else it becomes unnecessary. What essence is it to build a house without Christ’s peace indwelling in you? Therefore, getting a house as a material possession, for example, as a child of God, is to release the mental stress of thinking about where to lay your head after busy days of serving God, whether in the church or your vocation.
Nothing in this world can satisfy the spiritual hunger God has deeply fixed in the hearts of men to seek Him (see Ecclesiastes 3:11). That is why God made Jesus the head over all things for you – his church. He knows men love things and like seeing many inventions (see Ecclesiastics 7:29). So, He has programmed His kingdom system like this: “Pursue a deeper intimacy with God, and He will add all things to you without your struggle.” That’s the meaning of Matthew 6:33.
It’s not good to work seeking things in life as you live a Christ-centred life; you’ll be distracted. Aim and work to know the Creator deeper, and He will direct you and supply all your needs with divine understanding to manage them.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for making Jesus the head of all things for the Church, which I’m inclusive of. I pray that my focus won’t shift from knowing You deeper daily to chasing after life’s possessions. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
