Get Rid of the Old Yeast

[7] “Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? [7] Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” – 1 Corinthians 5:6-7 (NIV)

Yeast is one significant element in preparing food such as bread. It helps to leaven the flour in the bread so it could become big. But one interesting thing about it is that it doesn’t have to be plenty to leave a batch of dough. Just a little is enough. Paul, with this understanding, rebuked the Corinthian church using this analogy of how yeast leavens bread. He said that a small sin can become a yeast (sin) that spreads amongst several people and in several areas of one’s life. For example, it is common to see a smoker turn up to become a fornicator. Do you know why? Because the entrance of that demon of smoking creates room for other demons to enter.

You must understand that the devil is on a mission to destroy lives. So when you give him one chance but refuse to repent and desist from such sinful acts, he will continue adding up other sins as you keep feeding on that sinful desire developing in you. That explains why many people who live in sin gravitate from bad to worse over time. It’s the devil’s speciality.

Before Paul reached out to the Corinthians, they were idol worshippers. In fact, they were so deep in sin that some people were committing incest with their father’s wives (well, polygamy was common in those days). Unfortunately, when some got saved, they still continued in those sins, especially the sexual ones such as fornication. So Paul upbraided them on account of that. Today, that correction speaks unto us.

When you get saved, you must get rid of the old yeast – comprising sinful thoughts and delicacies and put on the new man, which is renewed by Christ. You must understand and live in the consciousness that you are a new creature in Christ even though you can’t see any physical evidence of it. Let me tell you something. There is nothing good in sin for you. Commit your ways to the Lord, and you will flourish.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for purging me of my old sins. Today, I pray that any evil lingering thought in my mind that tries to draw me back; be gone in the name of Jesus. Amen!
