A Little Yeast Works Through the Whole Dough

[9] “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” – Galatians 5:9 (NIV)

Have you ever witnessed the baking of bread before? If yes, I guess you can relate to what the apostle Paul said in Galatians 5:9. Bread bakers don’t need to use a lot of yeast to leaven a whole dough; just a little is enough. Today, that strategy has helped many bread companies save money. There is nothing wrong with the doctrine, but in addressing issues about sin in the believer’s life, it is vital to understand how critical it is.

Paul was correcting some believers who were drifting back into sinful life after encountering the gospel of grace. That was when he said in Galatians 5:9, “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” What does that mean?

When it comes to sin, we believers in Christ are not supposed to entertain it, not even in our thoughts. Yes, we can’t control the thoughts that come into our minds, but we do have divine authority to decide which ones stay. When you allow sin to have you, even the smallest act will spread through other areas of your life. That is what Paul meant when he said the yeast (representing sin) works through the whole batch of dough (all areas of life).

Dear friend, be determined not to get close to things and areas that will trigger any form of sin. If it’s sexual immorality, run from it. Don’t say that you have power over it, so you’re going to test it. No! God wants you to be so free and focused on your divine mandate that He doesn’t want you to add struggles with sin in your life. Take care of your spiritual growth and pursue a deeper intimacy with Him.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, help me not get close to any form of sin so I will live a clean life. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen!
