Estimate the Cost Before Starting to Build

[28] “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it” – Luke 14:28 (NKJV)

I had a friend who studied quantity surveying during my undergraduate studies at the university. I watched him draw an estimate of the cost of magnificent building plans, suggesting quality materials to use, some of which I had never heard before. I then realised that it takes a lot to raise a building; it’s not done by guesswork.

Then later, I saw what Jesus said in Luke 14:28 when He asked His congregation whether or not they estimate the cost before starting to build a tower. But I wondered, back in Jesus’ time, there weren’t many advancements in construction technology like today. So, how did He know this? But it’s written that Jesus Christ is the embodiment of all wisdom and knowledge (see Colossians 2:3). So, it’s not surprising that Jesus knew, even in an advanced way, what the people didn’t know.

Frankly, many people apply this principle of estimating cost in construction, but not in other areas like building a ministry, corporation, business or family. Some people marry without considering the responsibilities of building a strong family. Some start businesses without even doing a feasibility analysis of their business ideas. No wonder over eighty percent of start-ups collapse in their first year of establishment.

Let me talk about business before ministry. Dear businessman, building your business is costly. It’ll demand so much of your time and brainwork to develop structures and systems. So it’s not just about money. Dear minister, reaching the world doesn’t depend only on how powerful God’s message given to you is. You need the finance, human resources and equipment to make it presentable across diverse platforms.

Let’s not trivialise anything God tells us to do and live with the assumption that He will provide. Yes, He will provide for that vision, but you must put in the work. It won’t come on a silver platter.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the wisdom behind estimating the cost before starting to build anything You tell us to do. Please help us to work diligently as we live to fulfil our divine mandates. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
