[22] Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. [23] For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.” — Luke 12:22 - 23 NIV
What is life? Some say it’s like chess, where players try to outmanoeuvre one another in a game. Others say it’s full of struggles, where people must do everything possible to survive. There are several perspectives on how people view life. But it doesn’t matter what the masses say. What God says is final. If God is the Creator of life, He’s the best person to define it. Jesus said in John 17:3 that,
Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
John 17:3 NIV
So life is all about knowing God and Jesus, the sent one. It’s through this knowledge that everything in your life must be rooted. For example, people work, but it’s those who work effectively and purposefully who know God’s purpose for creating work and why they ought to do it. You see, it’s not about the things you have but how much you understand God and His ways.
God initially formed this world to be an extension of His kingdom, not just to serve as a place where creatures would live temporarily. So following this spiritual understanding, Jesus told His followers, and now to us, that we should not worry about our lives – what we’ll eat and wear, because life is beyond these things.
Food is essential, as is clothing. But when you start worrying about it, you’re drifting from living freely unto God to living for food. God promises to magnetise our basic necessities of life if we’ll only seek His kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).
Yes, sometimes you may wish that your life were better than it is today. But there’s hope. Anchor your hope in the Lord, and live with eternity in mind. You’ll see that what many people struggle to get will be supplied to you without struggle. Your life on this earth is relevant because you’re here to fulfil your divine purpose. Work, take care of yourself and your family. However, ensure that in everything you do, it is for the glory of God and not just to meet the demands of life.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray that You’ll help me to become more eternity-conscious in all my ways. I put my trust in You today to supply everything I need as I seek and work to fulfil my divine mandate. Amen!
