[17] “I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.” – Romans 16:17 (NIV)
Paul wrote the Epistle of Romans to Christians in Rome at that time. Today, every part of that epistle applies to us also. But I was surprised when I read Romans 16:17, where Paul told his fellow believers to disassociate from haters of unity in Christ. But why?
Back in those days, there weren’t many churches as of today. They were just followers of Christ. And even at that time, there were still people preaching strange doctrines against the gospel of Christ. Today, it’s even worse with more churches, which are profitable for impact, but with diverse and strange doctrines.
The Church, as a whole, is Jesus’ bride. Despite the issues in it, Jesus said He’d build her (see Matthew 16:18). Therefore, don’t become a hindrance to Jesus’ project by causing divisions among believers. The fact that you don’t agree in doctrine with another person doesn’t mean you should cause divisions among God’s people.
Watch out (observe) those who cause divisions and preach doctrines against the truth about Jesus you’ve received. If you have to unfollow them online, do so. If you have to stop listening to their sermons, do it. The goal is to help you stay in the faith without confusion. Above all, commit to personal spiritual growth and see God lift you high in His kingdom.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your immense love and care for me. Make me sensitive to deception in order to avoid confusing myself about the truth I’ve received. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
