Be Wise in Dealing with Divisive People

[10] “Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them.” – Titus 3:10 (NIV)

It may shock you, but some people in the body of Christ cause division among others, especially in the brethren. Such people usually make up controversies that spark quarrels among friends, eventually separating them. I have experienced several of them, both in my personal life and in the church. In some cases, the arguments get so heated that some leave church without returning. But the question is, who said church is a no-offence area? It isn’t scriptural to think you’ll never be offended by anyone in church. Jesus said in Luke 17:1 (NKJV) that,

[1] … “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come!”

So, while we cannot prevent offences from occurring in the church, we must be wise in dealing with divisive people. Paul recommends that when we spot them, we should warn them of their behaviour once, and if they don’t heed it, we should do it again. If they continue in it, then we are not required to have anything to do with them. That means you can still have fellowship with a divisive person in church, but have no relations with that person.

Divisive people don’t have good character. They need transformation, and only God can do that. However, to prevent yourself from getting influenced by their toxic behaviour, you are required not to be close to them. Remember that bad company corrupts good morals (see 1 Corinthians 15:33). So, guard your spiritual sanity by abstaining from divisive people.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, keep me away from friends who destroy the good relationships with people You have ordained to be in my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
