Do Not Take Advantage of Your Fellow Believer in Christ

[3] “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; [4] that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, [5] not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; [6] and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:3-6 (NIV)

Sexual exploitation and abuse is real. It happens in many workplaces, usually involving top executives using their power to exploit entry-level employees to keep their jobs secure. At first, I thought this was a world issue, but unfortunately, there have been many recent church scandals involving pastors and some congregants in these heinous sins. Paul knew such things would happen. That is why, after telling believers to abstain from sexual immorality and practice self-control, he added that we shouldn’t take advantage of any fellow believer. The King James version uses the word “defraud” instead of “take advantage.” That’s such a strong word.

God gave you all the power, visibility, and authority among His people for you to use to bless them, not take advantage of them. Dear minister, are you abusing people in your church by making them do things that are biblically wrong? Dear Christian, are you setting a trap for a fellow brethren to fall into so you’ll use his/her vulnerability to indulge in sexual immorality? Repent of these things, for God’s judgment is coming upon all of them.

Instead of exploiting people, why don’t you help them? Speak unto their capacity. Minister the Word of Christ powerfully to them. Build each other up rather than tearing them down. God’s gifts in you are for the benefit of others, not for their exploitation.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, help me to use every gift You have given me for the benefit of others and Your glory. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
