Commit Your Spirit to God

[5] “ Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.” – Psalms 31:5 (NKJV)

Man is made up of three complex compartments merged as one. These are the spirit, soul and body. Now, each of these compartments can be injured. When the body is injured or diseased, people go to the doctor. But what do people do when the soul or spirit is injured? (An example of soul injury is depression, and that of the spirit is fornication). Doctors can’t help with the body injury. Psychologists can help with the soul. But for the spirit, only God can. Nevertheless, God is the only all-around specialist in healing people – spirit, soul body. Proverbs 18:14 (NIV) says,

“The human spirit can endure in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?”

Look at that. It’s difficult to live with a crushed spirit. An example of such a person is one who’s going through a recent breakup, especially one in which the relationship has lasted for years. Such an experience is so painful that if God’s Word isn’t constantly used to feed the person, one can harm oneself brutally. Recently, a nurse shared a sad story of how someone who poisoned himself died because his girlfriend left him. How sad! In fact, I was shocked when I found out, through research by the University of Georgia, that between 2003 and 2020, one out of five suicides involved intimate partner problems. People are really suffering in this world.

See, I’ve come to realise that life is filled with so many uncertainties that if you don’t depend on God to live and keep your whole being – spirit, soul and body in good health, you’ll consistently be in trouble. People are disappointing you. Others are giving you bad news. Media companies are broadcasting sad news every single day. Hmm!

Keep praying like David did to keep his spirit. Medicine can treat your body. Clinical psychologists can help you deal with soul problems. But for your spirit, be wise. Don’t commit it to people. If you commit it to them, shocks from disappointments can really harm you (I speak as a man who has survived this several times). Put all jokes aside concerning these matters and commit your spirit to God.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, in your hands I commit my spirit. Save me from depending totally on people for my well-being. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
