“Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.” — Proverbs 21:23 NKJV
Nobody’s life is perfect. There are ups and sometimes downs. Issues come here and there, and while some people easily break down when facing some of their challenges, Jesus reminds us in John 16:33 to be of good cheer because He has overcome the world.
Some life issues happen without our control. Nevertheless, some do because we get ourselves into it. James 1:2 (NKJV) says
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,
If a whole Apostle James doesn’t deny the truth that there are some trials we intentionally fall into, then it’s evident that we’ll keep making mistakes, and that’s not bad because it creates space in our lives to learn from experiences.
Solomon says in Proverbs 21:23 that the one who guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles. Now, wait a minute. The preacher is saying, if you can put a check on your words, some problems in life will never happen to you, much more to talk about they afflicting your soul.
For instance, Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus with a kiss. He used his mouth to identify Jesus in the midst of his disciples at Gethsemane. And after this man did that, he got so afflicted in his soul that he eventually committed suicide. He couldn’t bear the remorse of seeing his Master crucified.
Now here’s my point. If Judas had always taken what Jesus taught personal and defeated the devil with the sword of the Word every time thoughts of betrayal come, it wouldn’t have gone this bad. Nonetheless, he never shared his struggle with anyone.
Before you say something, vet the thought that comes into your mind about it. Is it godly? Will it end up ministering grace to the other person or slander him? If you are careful to do this, you’ll keep your soul from troubles that emerge because of poor word choices.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
God, make me conscious of Your Word every time. Strengthen me to win the war of negative thoughts the enemy sows in my mind daily. Amen!
