When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with timbrels and lyres. As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” — 1 Samuel 18:6 - 7 NIV
We live in a world where popular opinions generally get accepted as right, and the truth is gradually getting abandoned. However, a lie, no matter how many people say it, never changes to be the truth.
In 1 Samuel 17, David, through the help of God, defeated Goliath. That was his first battle as army personnel. Meanwhile, after that defeat, the Israelite women began singing the song hailing David for such a remarkable victory. They said
“…Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” (1 Samuel 18:7)
However, that statement wasn’t true because David had only killed Goliath, whereas Saul had killed many people in several battles.
When Saul heard this, he became angry and perceived that David wanted his throne. So since then, the Bible says that he kept a close watch on David (1 Samuel 18:9).
Saul had already lost the throne in 1 Samuel 15:23. So instead of embracing and preparing David to mount the throne, he decided to fight and get rid of him. He lost focus, and his reign from that time till death was horrible.
The devil uses comparison to sow envy and loss of focus in many people. And because Saul didn’t know that, it didn’t end well with him, even though God chose him to be king over Israel.
I suppose you don’t want your life to be like King Saul, right? If so, you have to learn how to boycott wrong popular opinions.
Check what people are saying. Take what’s profitable and pay no attention to what’s untrue. Ecclesiastes 7:21 warns us not to pay attention to every word people say. Just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s profitable to your hearing.
Also, remind yourself about God’s vision for your life. Where there’s vision, focus is born (Proverbs 29:18). Don’t allow what people are doing and saying to intimidate you. Follow God’s pattern for your life. You’re not created in Christ to run another man’s race but yours. Find your purpose in Christ, and live it.
You’re a blessing.
