[1] “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” – Romans 13:1 (NIV)
Government authorities play key roles in ensuring countries get to run each day. Without them, several things won’t function well in our society. But unfortunately, they are one of the most persecuted and disrespected sects of people in the world. Today, because of the abundance of smartphones, anybody can make a video or post on social media insulting people in authority. As a believer, you may have many grievances against how your country is run, because of a truth, many of these leaders are selfish and don’t do their work well. But the bible says you must be subject to governing authorities.
The word “subject,” used in Romans 13:1, means “submit.” So you must submit to the instructions coming from government officials, not to insult them. But why? Because the Bible says it is God who established authority. In other words, that person in government is there because God placed him there. However, it doesn’t mean all that government authorities do are from God.
Dear believer, to prevent running into trouble, obey the laws of your country and focus on living purposefully to please God. That way, you can enjoy peace in your own life. However, never forget to pray for those in authority – that God will turn their hearts to do what is right and not what their selfish cravings long for.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for establishing authority in my country. Help me to be subject to governing authorities as I live to please You. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
