“[1] An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels.” — Proverbs 18:1 NIV
Nowadays, people pretend to befriend others easily. They go by the term “networking” because they’ve been taught to think they’ll need people in life. That is true because God didn’t create any human to live like an island – self-sufficient without the input of others. But when it becomes all about making friends for selfish reasons, that’s terrible.
Proverbs 18:1 says that it’s only an unfriendly person that pursues selfish ends. My emphasis is on “selfish ends.” That means it’s hard to know the exact reason(s) why someone comes close to you until that person stays long. Time is a tremendous revelator of people’s deep intents for being around your life.
Anyone who’s around your life for selfish reasons will be exposed as time goes by. So your goal isn’t to know the intent of people befriending you. Just continue walking in good works God created you in Christ to live (see Ephesians 2:10). And the Lord, who knows the secrets of people’s hearts, will save you from all harm.
Nevertheless, don’t neglect what your conscience tells you about people. Why? Because conscience is the voice of your inner man. It can save you from wrong relationships if you heed it with the help of God.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to locate wise friends I’d cleave unto in life. Lead me in the name of Jesus, to be and walk in the company of good people ordained by You for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
