Who are you? What defines your entire being, and what purpose were you created for? These are questions that shape the life of every person who walks the earth. Each individual searches for significance and yearns to understand their identity. Yet, often, we get misled and construct our identities based on personal aspirations and desires, losing sight of our true purpose.
Just as an artefact developed by a craftsman – the only real and suitable use of that artefact cannot be determined by the creation itself but by its creator. Similarly, a person cannot find their real identity through innate desires but by understanding the purpose the Creator (God) had in mind. Every human was created for a purpose and can only flourish in their corresponding environment – Christ. Your significance and identity can only be found in Him. Join us to uncover the wonderful truth of who you are and how to discover your true significance.
You can’t identify with your desires.
This journey of self-discovery is often misleading. We tend to hold on to singular aspects of ourselves, avoid the parts we dislike, and create incomplete concepts about who we are. That is why so many people battle insecurities, self-doubt, and self-hatred. When we try to build our identity around single preferences or traits, saying, “This is who I am,” we miss the bigger picture of our existence. The Psalmist declares in Psalm 139:14,
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Every fragment, every trait, every God-given aspect makes you who you are—uniquely different from others. You need to look at the bigger picture. It is there you will find satisfaction.
Your collective purpose
You are made up of numerous parts – talents, passions and flaws – but your true identity emerges when you understand their collective purpose. The key is in answering these questions: why were you created, and why was it necessary that there be a “you”? No self-help book can tell you this. You must understand that every human existence is intentional and not random or accidental. According to scripture, God says He knew you before you were formed in the womb, crafting every detail of you with precise intention.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart” (Jeremiah 1:5). “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). Finally, He says “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).
Every fragment, every trait, every God-given aspect makes you who you are—uniquely different from others. You need to look at the bigger picture. It is there you will find satisfaction.
God has a divine plan and crafted it so you can play a specific role in it. Isn’t that a wonderful thought? You must know this so that it shifts your focus from what you want to be to discovering who you were meant to be.
God’s plan
This purpose for your creation has been clearly laid out in Isaiah 43:11. Isaiah 43:7 states,
“Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
Again, 1 Peter 2:9 also says you are a chosen people, God’s special possession, meant to declare the praises of God. Your purpose is to express God. You were created in his image, so you can perfectly represent Him on this earth.
Now the question is, what gifts has God given me? What passions has He placed in my heart? And most importantly, how does it serve its intended purpose in God’s plan? This realisation will free you from the limiting identity you give yourself. You no longer need to identify with your preferences, struggles, and desires. Instead, you are free to express who you truly are, according to the master craftsman Christ.
In conclusion, the journey to discovering who you are isn’t found in isolating certain things you like and dislike about yourself but in understanding your complete God-given purpose. So, your true satisfaction comes from aligning with the bigger picture of what God has in mind. Rather than struggling to fit into society’s labels or creating niches about yourself, go into the Word and discover the great things God has planned for you.
