What Does It Mean To Walk In The Spirit?

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” — Galatians 5:25 NKJV

You may have heard this phrase several times: “walk in the Spirit.” But have you for once asked yourself what it means to do that? Yes, as children of God, we’re in the Spirit – the Bible says (Romans 8:9). But living in the Spirit is different from walking in the Spirit. To live in the Spirit, you must be born again. However, to walk in the Spirit, you must live in submission to the Holy Spirit.

Have you ever seen an ant walking in a closed bottle before? It’s so little, and no matter how much effort it puts in, it can never get out of the bottle by itself. In the same way, God is mightier than you. The Holy Spirit in you is greater than you, although you can’t see Him. So when you walk in the Spirit, you’re actually submitting yourself to live and do everything in the confines of the Holy Spirit. That implies two things.

To live in the Spirit, you must be born again. However, to walk in the Spirit, you must live in submission to the Holy Spirit.

First, the Holy Spirit doesn’t limit you on everything you have to do. In other words, you shouldn’t over-spiritualize everything in your life in the name of God. Just live freely, bearing the consciousness that you’ll do what God likes through the empowerment of His grace.

Secondly, understanding the ministry of the Holy Spirit will make you comprehend how He works in us as believers in Christ. Jesus said in John 16:14 that the Holy Spirit would glorify Him by taking what’s His and declaring it to us (believers). Now, if Jesus is the Word of God (John 1:14), it means walking in the Spirit is directly connected to living the Word of God.

So here’s the point. If you want to walk in the Spirit, submit to God by following His Word and doing what the Spirit tells you to do.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Father, I pray today that my submission to Your Word and Spirit in me be in constant increase beginning from today. Help me to put fleshly desires away, as I always choose to do Your will. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
