[1] “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” – Colossians 3:1 (KJV)
While growing up as a teenager, I thought Colossians 3:1 meant that we should seek heavenly things without anything earthly like clothes, cars or even houses. Because of that shallow understanding, I thought Christianity was a beggarly life with no comfort. Later, by the mercy and increasing revelation of scripture by the possibilities of the Holy Spirit, I understood that “things which are above” in Colossians 3:1 isn’t exclusive of physical things. So what are things above as written in the scripture?
The things above Paul spoke of refer to all things that glorify the name of Jesus, essential to the fulfilment of divine purpose on Earth. For example, if God provides me a car as His minister to ease my ministerial schedules, there’s nothing wrong with it. The vehicle is earthly, but its usage in my life is for God’s kingdom, not to make me proud of my possessions. It’s the same for clothes, houses, and other necessities in life meant for us to live well. As a child of God, can you go to church naked? You can if you have no clothes, but it’s not advisable and even shameful. So if you spend a part of your money to get good clothes, know that those clothes you have are for God’s purposes.
I’ve always said that earthly possessions are not a problem; it’s the usage and mentality behind them that are problematic in many people’s lives. As a believer, acknowledge that God’s plan for your life is for your good. He desires to bless you with so much abundance in order to enjoy life as well as be a blessing to others. Refuse to embrace poverty as a lifestyle. But as you grow in wealth, never forget that God is your God, not what you have.

Father, help me to have a clean mentality towards any possession you bless me with to help fulfil my divine purpose. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
