Wealth Can Make People Proud

[23] “The poor plead for mercy, but the rich answer harshly.” – Proverbs 18:23 (NIV)

Have you encountered a rich person who speaks calmly before? Maybe yes, but for me, I’m yet to see one. Wealth can make people proud, especially if such a person is an unbeliever. Do you know why? It’s because when there is enough money in a person’s life, especially a man, he speaks with a lot of ego. In fact, many wealthy people place their confidence in life in what they have instead of God, even without realising it. Such was the case of the rich young ruler.

Many people say that Jesus wanted him (the rich young ruler) to be poor before following Him just because He (Jesus) told the man to give his possessions to the poor. But that’s not true. He wanted to test his heart, and the man failed. You see, God is more concerned with what’s in our hearts than what we see or have. That is why the greatest people God has ever worked with to impact generations for Him haven’t been the rich but the neglected in society.

It is not wrong to be wealthy. As a matter of fact, being a rich Christian is beneficial because it helps finance God’s work. But if a person’s heart isn’t right with God, such a person won’t regard God when he becomes more affluent. And that is very tragic.

Dear friend, God wants you to prosper financially, but not at the expense of your godliness at heart. He doesn’t want you to use dubious means to get money. No! He wants you to work and remain humble under His feet as He lifts you up. Don’t give up!

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your love in my life. Help me to remain humble no matter how wealthy You lift me to be. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
