Be Grateful to God

When I was just a child in the Ghanaian cultural setting, I observed that when the older folks exchanged pleasantries, and one asked his fellow, “How are you?” the natural response was, “By His grace…”. I thought that was odd as a child. But now, as an adult who has understood how pervasive God is in our lives, I have come to appreciate that part of the culture that acknowledges the Father that everything is “By His grace.” As children of God, we must emulate King David, who was not shy of expressing his gratitude to God by proclaiming His goodness for all to see.

A grateful heart is never silent but expressive. We must show God our appreciation always. In Luke 17:15-19, when Jesus had healed the ten lepers, only one of them came back and fell at his feet to give thanks to Him. Jesus asked of the rest and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? (Luke 17:17)” He later asked the man to go and told him his faith had made him well. We must always approach God with a grateful heart, even before we make any requests from Him. And God, who is ever faithful and generous will reward us according to our faith.

Ungratefulness is ungodly. We must make it a daily mission to be like that one leper who came back to thank Jesus.

God will always be merciful to people

God will always be merciful to people. When we take a moment to critically examine the details pertaining to our lives, we will be amazed at how God is in the details, considering the air we breathe, the rain, the sunshine, etc. God, in His infinite mercies, has made provisions for us already (see Mathew 6:26-30). But sometimes, because we’re too engrossed in the achievement of the material things of the world, like getting that degree or that billion-dollar contract, we tend to overlook the free gifts of our Father, so much so that when we fail to achieve these material things, we do not feel compelled to thank God for anything (see 2 Timothy 3:2). Beloved, ungratefulness is ungodly. We must make it a daily mission to be like that one leper who came back to thank Jesus.

Thank God for everything

Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “In all things give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Our Father is a faithful God, and He knows the plans He has for us. That is why we are being admonished to give thanks in all circumstances.

Beloved of God, sing praises to God, rejoice and always live with a grateful heart when things are looking good for us or not. For our God is generous and will reward us when we constantly give thanks to Him for everything He does for us.
