“And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” — Mark 9:35 NKJV
Many people are consumed with the spirit of competition. People, especially some men, want to be great to show their fellows that they are better than them. And that was no difference seen in Jesus’ team of twelve apostles.
One time, these disciples (including Judas Iscariot) disputed amongst themselves about who’ll be the greatest. Jesus was busy and couldn’t listen to them. But later on, He asked them about what thing they were arguing. The disciples kept silent, thinking Jesus couldn’t discern what they did.
So Jesus, wanting to both end the argument in their minds and show them the pathway to greatness, said that “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” That means that in Christ, leadership isn’t about positions or titles but service to others.
Probably you may not understand this well. But can I ask you a question? What does your leader do that makes him different from you? Do you know the amount of labour that comes with his position? Why do you want to fill his place if you’re not ready to do what he does?
Stop trivialising leaders and coveting their positions. You may not be the boss at your workplace. However, focus on serving and doing what’s godly but uncommon such as practising daily Bible reading, fasting, book reading and praying consistently. God will exalt you.
Remember that leaders consistently do what ordinary people occasionally do.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for showing me in Your Word (Mark 9:35) that the pathway to greatness is about servant leadership. Help me serve my way up in my position. Amen!
