“And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” — Mark 9:28 - 29 NKJV
There was a time in scripture that an anxious father brought his epileptic son to Jesus to heal. Jesus wasn’t around, but the disciples were. This man spoke to the disciples to cast the demon out, but they couldn’t do it (Mark 9:17 – 18). Wow!
You may have asked, “how can these disciples be with Jesus for so long, yet they couldn’t do what their Master does frequently?” But Jesus appears on the scene later and rebukes the disciples’ lack of faith first before casting out the demon in the boy (Mark 9:19). That tells us that Jesus wanted the disciples to grow faster and do mightier exploits than Himself, but they weren’t picking up.
After all these things happened, His disciples asked Him why they couldn’t cast out the demon. But Jesus replied, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29 NKJV) What in the world does that mean?
If you want to go the extra mile about doing kingdom exploits as a child of God, you cannot neglect prayer and fasting. It looks simple but is extremely powerful.
The more you pray and fast, the more you yield to the Lord. And the more you yield to the Lord, the more He, through the Holy Spirit, will use you to do great things in His kingdom.
Don’t be an ordinary Christian. Don’t just become committed to God in public, fasting and praying only when there’s a Christian gathering or church announcement declarations. No! Ensure your dedication to God in private is also intact through consistent fellowship.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, in Jesus’ name, I receive grace to go the extra mile in You by prayer and fasting. Increase my personal commitment in my walk with You. Amen!
