“Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” — Matthew 17:4 - 5 NIV
God has a language with which He speaks to His people. That language is Jesus. Before Jesus came to the world, God used to speak through the prophets (Hebrews 1:1). But now, the narrative has changed. Jesus is the current language of God. However, two questions arise: “what does it mean to say ‘Jesus is the current language of God?’” and “when did this shift occur?”
Jesus being the current language of God means that whatever God will say to us is communicated by Jesus. Even the Holy Spirit knows this and does it. Jesus said in John 16:14 (NIV),
He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.
John 16:14 NIV
The “He” in the above verse is the Holy Spirit. So the Holy Spirit isn’t really working. He’s doing everything in submission to Jesus. That’s the power of language declaration.
But again, this language shift happened on the mount of Transfiguration, when God said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased. Listen to him!” When the Father declared it, both Moses and Elijah were there. Moses represented the patriarchs, and Elijah represented the prophets. So amongst all the servants of God, Jesus is the One chosen for all of us to listen to. Everything in the Bible reveals Jesus. He is God’s new thing. Choose to listen to Him. Choose to listen to His anointed servants who teach sound doctrine. You’ll not drift from the gospel of grace.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Oh God, I pray that You’ll help me to know and understand Your Son more intimately each day. Help me to discern His voice directly from the Bible, the Holy Spirit and Your servants. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
