[22] “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.” — Proverbs 10:22 NKJV
A few months before I wrote this devotional, I chatted with a friend who just completed tertiary education and was looking for a job. He told me clearly that he was not looking for loyalty to a boss but to search for money. I realised that he was willing to do whatever it took to make money by his own strength without thinking about what the blessing of the Lord could do for him. It won’t surprise me to hear similar words from other youngsters who have just stepped into the job market.
Many people are willing to trade off sleep to work for paychecks, thinking less about working to establish and expand God’s kingdom. That’s why there are many people in churches yet living as if God isn’t the provider for their lives.
Yes, it’s true that the scripture says, “… If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat” (II Thessalonians 3:10 NKJV). But God provides food for several creatures without their struggle.
Friend, I want to encourage you that God didn’t put you in the world of work merely to work for paychecks. No. Otherwise, He would have introduced payroll systems in Eden when He made the world. But He didn’t. He created work for us mainly to make an impact on lives, and from it, He blesses us with so much beyond what we need. Human rewards are just peanuts compared to how God rewards us.
It’s the blessing of the Lord that makes you rich without sorrows, not any human remuneration. He gives you the power – strength in the anointing to get wealth (see Deuteronomy 8:18). Therefore, with this understanding, approach work in a different perspective – as working for the Lord and not for man (see Colossians 3:23).
Material blessings can make you live comfortably, but it doesn’t remove sorrows in life. Don’t depend on it.
God is the best rewarder for everything you do. So spend time with Him. He’ll energise you to work diligently and purposefully. And bless you to enjoy it and support others without any side effects.
Prayer:
Thank You, God, for assuring me in Your Word that Your blessing makes me rich (Proverbs 10:22), not my labour, hard work or special skills. I pray for the anointing to work purposefully, knowing that You’re my best reward for everything I do. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
