“A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.” - Proverbs 15:1 NKJV
If the Bible records some moments God became angry with some people, it implies anger is part of our makeup as humans because we are created in the image and likeness of God. Anger has never been tagged as a sin before God in the Bible. It’s how we manage it when it comes that’ll determine whether we sin or come out victoriously. Giving a soft answer to an angry man’s speech is a wise way to manage his anger.
In 1 Samuel 25, David sent ten men to Nabal’s house to ask for enough food for himself and his troops. David had done good deeds for this family some time ago. So he expected Nabal to honour his request. Nabal didn’t recognize David’s good deeds, making him speak very harshly to David’s men. David was furious and decided to strike the whole household. But Abigail, Nabal’s wife, knew that giving David a soft answer to his request would calm him down.
She secretly sent David and his troops enough foodstuffs. She didn’t tell her husband before doing it because she knew Nabal was a scoundrel, and his attitude could cost the lives of everyone in the household, including her.
Spouses, colleagues, friends, brethren, if someone close to you cause trouble or acts foolishly, cover them by making up for their mistakes. Giving away few resources to pursue peace is better than losing precious life of peace.
Lastly, be careful how you speak with representatives of high-profile people, including all Christians (because each child of God is Christ’s ambassador). I pray God empowers you with the Spirit of grace to know what to do when you or anybody close to you becomes angry.
You’re a blessing.
