“But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” — Matthew 5:37 NKJV
I’ve learned that nobody can determine everything that happens in his life. However, you choose how to respond to each situation. Some people encounter challenges and break down, only never to rise again. Some also learn from their mistakes and vow not to repeat them.
But there’s one thing others do amidst challenges. It’s called swearing. Normally, when this happens, the offended usually determines to avenge the offender at all costs. And that’s so bad. The Bible says in Romans 12:21 that,
[21] Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:21 NKJV
And again, Romans 12:19 (NKJV) says,
[19] Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.”
Jesus tells us not to swear at all; because whatever we stand on to swear – either heaven or earth belongs to God. He is telling us to respect the name of God by learning how to respond to situations wisely — saying “Yes” or “No.” That doesn’t mean all our words should be a “Yes” or a “No.” Instead, Jesus is saying that when it comes to problems, go for them or against them with wisdom, not vengeful actions.
You don’t need to avenge your adversary to prove a point. Even if you do good and go unappreciated, continue doing it. Man may forget to reward you, but God will never overlook recording your good works in heaven. And when Jesus comes again, you’ll receive it. Live with eternity in focus.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Oh God, I pray in the name of Jesus that any taste of vengeance in me towards my adversaries; be nullified by the power of the blood of Christ. Assist me to live in the consciousness that I don’t repay evil for evil but evil for good. Make me understand Your love deeper each day until Christ fully forms in me. Amen!
