Be Patient to Encourage

“Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.” - Proverbs 14:29 NIV

Patience is a virtue that is expressed through love. The Bible says love is patient. When you’re patient, you’ll think of how to help or answer others in a way that shows the love of God. From our opening text, every genuinely patient person has a great understanding. In other words, wise people don’t talk much when people bring problems to them. Why?— because they must understand the situation at hand before suggesting clever solutions as ideas.

I remember some time ago when I went to my pastor to present an issue. As disturbed as I was, this man was so calm that I couldn’t believe it; because I had never seen that in my life before. After speaking for a while, he just opened a Bible verse and gave out the solution in split seconds. I left totally encouraged.

You don’t need to be a rash-talker to display your wisdom. For it’s wise to become a quick hearer than a fast-talker. Be quick to hear but slow to speak (James 1:19). Don’t let the pressure to meet people’s needs cause you to speak something disastrous that’ll be traced back to you for years to come. Be patient to encourage others after listening to their problems.

You’re a blessing.
