[12] “And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.” – Ecclesiastes 12:12 (NKJV)
When I was a teenager, I remember one of my teachers telling my mother after a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting that she should talk to me because I studied too much. Of course, I liked studying even deeper into the night at that age. I liked reading. But even though I worked hard during those years, I usually got tired because I did not get adequate sleep. Did my efforts pay off? Yes, it did because I passed well in many of the examinations I wrote at that time. But after growing older and seeing other children do so, I remember what is written in Ecclesiastes 12:12 and advise them to take life easy.
Solomon is considered the wisest man who ever lived on the Earth. But his wisdom didn’t come from books. It was a gift God gave him free of charge. He knew all kinds of things and wrote books such as Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs. He comes to say in Ecclesiastes 12:12 that of making many books, there is no end, and much study will weary your flesh. Was he lying? Of course not. The more you study, the more tired you’ll be. In fact, studying takes up a lot of brain power.
However, he didn’t say studying too much is wearisome to your spirit. No! So, in no way does Ecclesiastes 12:12 tell us to put limits on getting divine knowledge. That is why there’s nowhere in scripture that tells you to limit your pursuit to know God better. Don’t be deceived by what you hear what others say about this verse. Study to show yourself approved unto God (see 2 Timothy 2:15), dear minister.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to be more studious of Your Word in my life. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen!
