“May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.” — Psalms 20:2 NIV
I was reading one of the books of Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, and I quite remember him saying that “everybody needs help, but not everyone wants it.” I see this to be true because many people try hard to do many things by themselves instead of calling other people to help them. Today, it’s rare to hear another person call you only to say, “I need your help.”
God never created us to do life by ourselves using human strength and intelligence. Why? Because Jesus said in John 15:3 that “…without Him, we can do nothing.” Meanwhile, there are people doing huge things who don’t know God. So what did Jesus mean? He meant that without Him, we would lack divine strength to carry out our eternal purposes for living.
David, knowing this very well, prayed in Psalms 20:2 that “May he (God) send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.” He knew he couldn’t do all that was on him without God. However, he was so selfless that he wrote it down for generations like us to have access to these kinds of prayers to use them.
Asking God for help isn’t a sin. It doesn’t dishonour the Holy Spirit in us. In fact, it enhances and expands God’s work. Jesus, although He was fully God and fully man, did not do ministry alone. He chose twelve apostles to help Him. How much more we?
Pray for helpers, and for team members. Pray to receive support from Zion (heaven); because the fulfilment of purpose isn’t just about you but for generations. Helpers are needed not only to serve under you as a leader but also to get trained to carry out divine mandates for generations. If Jesus used this knowledge to teach twelve disciples but lost one, and yet the ministry has expanded to date, then it’s about time every leader raises more leaders with the help of God and stops focusing on maintaining followers.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Oh God, I pray to ask for support from Zion. Never make me lack helpers in anything I do that honours You in the name of Jesus. Amen!
