Take Off the Grave Clothes

The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” - John 11:44 NIV

The first command Jesus gave to the people who rolled the tombstone of Lazarus away was this: “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” It’s a simple command, but it defines the importance of spiritual transformation.

When Lazarus got raised from the dead, the grave clothes used to bury him were still covering him. I wonder how he walked out of the cave. Anyway, he did.

But before Jesus raised him from the dead, Martha complained of Lazarus having a bad odour after being buried four days ago. Jesus knew all these things, yet He commanded people to take off the grave clothes from Lazarus. Why? Because Lazarus was no more dead; he’s alive. Glory to God!

Here’re two lessons to learn from today’s Word:

  1. Before a person gets born again, you’ll have people saying that fellow is unworthy to receive the gospel. Discard that talk.
  2. Able ministers of grace must help saved people (who were dead in sin but now alive in Christ) to overcome every wrong attitude through discipleship using the Word of God.

Stop condemning new converts when they behave poorly. Such behaviour is a grave cloth that must be taken away. Help them!

You’re a blessing.
