[23] “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.” – 1 Corinthians 10:23 (NKJV)
Freedom is costly to obtain, but maintaining it requires a lot of responsibility. I speak as a sad man who hails from Africa, having seen many countries on the continent gain independence yet unable to build good cities that stand the test of time. Today, many politicians get into office and think about stealing money for personal use instead of helping their countries develop. But that aside, we, as believers, have much responsibility when it comes to managing the freedom and liberty in Christ we have been given since each person’s day of salvation.
Paul said something profound in 1 Corinthians 10:23 that has stuck with me for years. He said that all things are lawful for him, but not all things are helpful for him to get his life engaged with it. Secondly, he said not all things edify him. I believe the scriptures are written for us. So, applying what is written therein to our lives is for our benefit.
As a believer in Christ, your freedom and liberty are gifts from God to you. That means you can use whatever you want your life for. But not all things will be good for you. For sin, it’s even improper to be associated with you. Why? Because if you don’t live a life that pleases God, both in secret and public, how can those who are in darkness look up to you to see Christ? Think about that! Manage your freedom in Christ. Use your life to indulge in what will help you to advance the course of God’s destiny upon your life for the glorification of the name of Jesus.
Prayer:
Father, help me discern what is fit for me to indulge in my life, as it is in synchrony with your destiny in my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
