Honour Your Father and Mother

“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” — Ephesians 6:2 - 3 NIV

As a Christian, there are some blessings you don’t have to pray to see them manifest in your life. You only have to obey simple Biblical principles. One of them is long life.

In Ephesians 6:2, it’s written that when you honour your father and mother, you shall enjoy long life on the earth. So it’s not only about prolonging your days but also enjoying eternal life as your days increase. Then again, what’s the meaning of the word “honour” as used in the scripture above?

According to Strong’s Concordance, “honour” is translated from the Greek word “timaō,” which means revere. To revere someone means to regard that person with great devotion. So honouring your parent means giving them a special place in your heart.

It doesn’t mean obeying them every time, especially when they’re telling you to do something unbiblical or sinful. It means submitting to their advice and leadership as long as they are your parents and what they say will benefit your life.

Of a truth, your parents may not know God more than you. But they certainly have more life experiences than you. So your spiritual understanding may be higher than theirs, but their comprehension of life is broader than yours. Honour them and pray for them because, after all, they’ve been faithful to take care of you.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Oh God, thank You for placing me in a biological family. They may not be perfect people, but I thank You for giving them the provision to take care of me. Give them more life to their years; so that none will die without knowing You. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
