“that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.” — I Thessalonians 4:6 - 7 NKJV
Myles Munroe once said that “When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable.”
When you don’t know why you have something, you’ll either misuse or abuse (abnormally use) it. And sometimes, this principle gets applied to business products. But according to God’s Word, it applies to our human bodies too.
When you don’t know why God has given you a body, you’ll use it anyhow and may even fail to think about the implications of your actions today. Think about the prostitutes on the streets almost every evening. They decide to sell their body to get money, forgetting that they’ll contract all kinds of sexually transmitted infections and die prematurely. But I don’t blame them that much because they are under the power of the evil once since they are of the world (1 John 5:19, 2 Corinthians 4:4).
Paul told the church in Thessaloniki that God did not call us to uncleanness. Before saying that, he counselled them that it was (and still is) God’s will for them to abstain from sexual immorality. And also, each should learn how to control one’s own body in sanctification and honour.
Now note this. The Holy Spirit never inspired Paul to write that believers won’t have any inner desire for sex. No! He knows it’ll come in varied frequencies, and it’s not a bad feeling. It’s just that sex was made by God to be enjoyed in the context of marriage, not outside it. Hence, for each believer, God has given him the power to tame any desire that won’t end up glorifying His name when submitted unto, especially lies and sexual immorality.
Friend, glorifying God in all your actions partly depends on You, not God. God is the one who works in you to will and do for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13). However, doing the holy actions to revere Him is your responsibility. That is the meaning of the verse, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12).
Don’t give in your body as an instrument for unrighteousness (Romans 6:13). Know that God has given you this body first to glorify Him with everything you use it to do (1 Corinthians 6:20) and to fulfil your divine mandate. Care for it well, not because of others, but because it’s God’s temple (1 Corinthians 6:19).
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, help me to use my body for Your glory with whatever I use it for. Make me conscious of the purpose of giving me anything I have so that I will not abuse it. Amen!
