[3] “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, [4] so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” — Matthew 6:3 - 4 NIV
The left and right hands are very close. In fact, they are so close that both function effectively together, not individually. Think about the time you bathed or cooked food with your two hands. You may have used them together so long that you’re no longer conscious of their collaboration in helping you carry things out. But Jesus said something about the hands in Matthew 6:3.
He said when you, a believer, give to the needy, don’t allow your left hand to know what your right hand is doing. Wait a minute. If my right hand moves, automatically, my nerves will send the impulses to my brain, and I’ll be alert that my right hand has moved so that if it needs support, the left will come in.
Figuratively, Jesus said it’s possible to do something, especially helping a needy person, without people very close to you knowing it. That isn’t merely about money, but spiritual help, counsel, food or other things.
Some of us are seeking attention, so much so that we’re not willing to give secretly to the needy without letting others know about it. God doesn’t want us to live like that. What glory do you get if the whole world knows you helped a fellow get something he needs?
God rewards intentional good deeds done in secrecy to help others. He’s a big fan of that. He didn’t call you to make a name for yourself. Put away media influence in your charitable works, and do what God has called you to do with a pure heart, with or without recognition from people.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for assuring me that when I give to the poor in secrecy, You’ll reward me (Matthew 6:3-4). Help me to help others from a pure heart with wisdom to manage my mouth of help. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
