“For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.” — John 13:15 - 17 NKJV
One great example Jesus set before his disciples was to teach them how to serve others in humility. He did this when He washed all the disciples’ feet. In those days, the land of Israel was very dusty. Hence, the feet Jesus washed weren’t merely dirty but very dirty. That’s a picture of how Jesus made Himself of no reputation for the gospel’s sake. How many of us carry this consciousness in our minds daily?
More than ever, we have people who are experts about bragging about their positions in their workplaces and the ministry more than the God who took them there. It’s tragic, but it’s happening.
Pastor Rick Warren said, “humility isn’t thinking less about yourself; it’s about thinking about yourself less.” I want to use this statement to urge you to follow Jesus’ example of humble servitude in the Word of God. A servant is never greater than his master. And since you are in Christ, you’re a servant of God. That means you’ll never be greater than Jesus. Hence, you must be intentional about following Him in all your ways.
Knowledge is powerful, but it becomes beneficial and fruitful when it’s applied correctly. Jesus indirectly urged us in John 13:17 to practice His teaching and not just become fun of seeing others do it before us. It’s time to grow spiritually. And that involves replacing whatever part of our lives serving the lusts of this world with the dictates of the Word of Christ for total transformation.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Oh God, thank You for sending Your Son to teach us the way to go in the midst of this chaotic world. May I lay hold of eternal life in Your Word without wavering, no matter the storms of life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
