Don’t Entertain Sleep When It Is Time to Work

[10] “A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep—
[11] So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler,
And your need like an armed man.” – Proverbs 6:10-11 (NKJV)

When I was in my teens, I remember hearing some doctors telling people that they ought to sleep about eight hours every day. I didn’t like lots of sleep during that time because I used to study a lot deep into the night. But as I grew older and started working, I have learnt how important sleep and rest are. It is always good to use sleep as a resting mechanism, but the moment sleeping is preferred to work, there are harmful effects. One of them is poverty, as written in Proverbs 6:11.

Solomon said that he who sleeps at the time he’s supposed to use his hands to work will have poverty coming upon him like a prowler (a person who moves stealthily about or loiters near a place with a view of committing a crime). In addition to that, such a person’s needs will increase. So, I counsel you, dear reader, that don’t entertain sleep when it is time to work. Also, don’t abuse sleep and attribute it to a lack of desire to work, or else it’ll have an adverse effect on your life.

It is not natural to be living without a desire to work, especially if you are a believer. Come to think of it. God blesses people, but He blesses the work of their hands. Let this be in your consciousness. May the Lord help you.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the gift of work in my life. Help me to work diligently with what my hands find doing. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
