[4] “ Do not overwork to be rich; Because of your own understanding, cease![5] Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.” – Proverbs 23:4-5 (NKJV)
When I was a child, I never paid attention to how essential money is or will ever be in my life. I just depended on my parents to provide whatever I needed, and whether they had money to get it or not, I didn’t care. Now, I’m an adult, and there are so many things I have to pay for and provide. Since I gradually entered into that phase of life, I felt how much parents, especially fathers and bosses, are being pressured to provide. Sometimes, this desire can make people develop a craving for money so much that their commitment to God dwindles. How do the scriptures solve this problem? That is the purpose of this devotional.
The Bible says that, friend, do not overwork to be rich. The New International Version (NIV) of the Bible puts it like this: “Do not wear yourself out to get rich.” That means that you can get richer when you do extra work, but it shouldn’t necessarily have to be so. Why? Because wealth can fade. It is not dependable. I’ve seen one man lose billions of dollars when a sitting government that owed him decided not to pay their loans and even collapsed one of his banks.
There are better ways of becoming wealthy without needing to wear yourself out. One of them is activating God’s power to get wealth (see Deuteronomy 8:18). God can show you simple ways of earning money without having to take on two jobs or even invest in businesses under His guidance.
Work is not the only way to get wealth. How much did Solomon work to be the richest man who ever lived? God just blessed Him.
Go to God in prayer and let Him show you what to do with your money for Him to bless it. You’ll eventually become rich and a blessing to others without wearing yourself out.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your immeasurable power to get wealth bestowed upon us. Help me to activate such power in my life, so I’ll be rich and a blessing to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
