[7] “The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower is servant to the lender.” – Proverbs 22:7 (NKJV)
Years ago, I was passing by the living room at my parent’s house, and I was caught up on a sermon being played on television by Bishop David Oyedopo. He mentioned a scripture which has stayed with me to date. That scripture was Romans 13:8. It says,
“Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.”
Romans 13:8 (NKJV)
That means that as believers, we’re not supposed to owe people money but only love for one another. Meanwhile, it’s not so in many people’s lives. Today, friends take money from other friends and end up not paying or delay in paying it due to familiarity. And unfortunately, the devil has capitalised on it to create bitterness in the hearts of many people towards their debtors.
Since I came to learn that the Bible says the borrower is servant to the lender, I have understood that to live in debt turns your life into bondage to the one you owe money. I have seen many friends battle with mental insanity anytime they get a call from people they owe.
It’s God’s desire for you to prosper, so much so that you’ll lend to others and not borrow (see Deuteronomy 28:12). Stop overspending money you don’t earn, else you’ll keep borrowing from people to buy things you can’t afford, but you want.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for teaching me in Your word that the borrower is servant to the lender. Help me to live blessed in abundance so that I’ll be a blessing to others.
