[6] “Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.” – Matthew 7:6 (NKJV)
I’ve always wondered why Jesus used dogs as the animal we’re not supposed to give holy things to. Obviously, He wasn’t referring to native dogs. Instead, He was speaking of giving value to what deserves value and not mismatching it. For instance, if a pastor approves of a staunch Christian marrying an unbeliever in all sincerity, he has given a holy child of God to a child of the devil, openly defying God’s word that says we shouldn’t be equally yoked with unbelievers (see 2 Corinthians 6:14).
As far as you can discern that the people around you aren’t holy, do not expose holy things to them except for preaching the Word for their salvation. For example, as a minister, it’s erroneous to talk about ministerial plans and ideas with a drunkard. It just doesn’t make sense. In fact, you don’t need to explain yourself to people who don’t value what you do for the Lord. Even Jesus learned to use silence before ungodly kings like Pilate and Herod.
Not everyone will value the principles of God you cherish so much. Walk in wisdom towards unbelievers. Save yourself some time by not spending it with people who distract you from God’s call. Invest only in relationships that will keep you on course. It is well with you.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank you for cautioning me not to give what is holy to dogs according to scripture (Matthew 7:6). Help me to discern what is good to hold on to and who to talk about with, lest I interact with the wrong people about holy things. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
