“Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.” — Galatians 5:26 NIV
Conceit simply means vain glory. When a person becomes conceited, he gets so filled with himself that he thinks he’s above everybody and doesn’t submit to anyone. That happens because the Bible says “knowledge puffs up” – (1 Corinthians 8:1). So if a person becomes very knowledgeable and doesn’t stay conscious of the truth that his sufficiency of God, he can become conceited.
Paul, knowing the danger of this potential evil desire in believers, did not keep silent about it. He wrote it down, first to the Galatians church and now to us. After speaking about the differences between flesh and Spirit, he tells us to keep in step with the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:25) and not to become conceited or envy one another.
People of God, everybody’s race of faith is different, although purposes are connected. When you see someone moving forward, it doesn’t mean God has left you behind. In fact, what people brag about in the media doesn’t mean they don’t have life problems, which are usually undisclosed to the general public. Don’t be deceived. Follow Jesus, and stop comparing your life with another person. You’re different, so accept it and live on purpose with intentionality.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Oh God, I thank you for Your mercy. No matter how knowledgeable I am, let me not become conceited. Teach me how to be satisfied with what you’ve given me, so much so that I’ll love the journey you’re embarking with my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
