[13] “He who answers a matter before he hears it, It is folly and shame to him.” – Proverbs 18:13 (NIV)
Several years ago, I lived with a friend in the same room for almost a year during my final year of undergraduate study at the university. Sometimes, we run into problems making mistakes from each one of us. There were some tough times indeed. But in each one, I usually had to master the courage to talk the matter out for resolution. One time, my friend wanted to speak before I finished making a statement. But he said, “Oh, I have to learn how to listen.”
Since then, I have realised that some people in this world are bent on making a point or proving that they did no wrong by not listening to others who love them enough to correct them. This happens in offices, marriages, and even churches. In fact, every place where humans are gathered has potential relationship problems that surface over time. But as a child of God, you must develop good listening skills. Why?
The Bible says in Proverbs 13:20 that anybody who answers a matter before he hears it displays folly and shame. Pause and reflect on that! Judging a case before hearing the stories from both parties involved is not wise. Listening before you give a verdict will save you from crushing some precious friendships for good.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your wisdom in my life. Help me navigate relationships well regardless of the problems they bring. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
