By[35] “For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; [36] and a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ [37] He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” – Matthew 10:35-37 (NKJV)
The family system is the fundamental relationship system in the world. And so because of that, many people prioritise their families more than anything. Some ladies usually say, “Family is everything.” But before the first wife was formed for Adam, God was already there. That means God first before family. Right? However, we live in a generation where several people don’t prioritise God in their lives. And because of that, they find it challenging to prioritise Him over their families.
Jesus was addressing this issue in Matthew 10:35-37. He said He came to destroy some relationships – to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and lots more. In fact, He said a man’s enemies will be those in his own household. That is why family members can be one of the toughest hindrances against ministers. Out of love, a mother can tell her daughter not to marry a pastor, even if it’s God-ordained for the marriage to come to pass. And for God’s will to prevail, the daughter has to stand on the ground and say no to what her mum is saying.
Friend, I want to tell you that ardently following Jesus will cost you some close relationships. Not all issues between parents and believing children are evil. Some are meant to be so for God’s will to prevail. So, just in case you are having such experiences, resolve it and let your parents know that God’s will is superior to theirs. May the Lord strengthen you to do His will entirely.
