[23] “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, [24] since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” — Colossians 3:23 - 24 NIV
This world is full of work. Because of different time zones around the globe, people are working 24/7. But what’s the primary purpose of work, and why do we do it?
God is the one who created work from the beginning. Its primary purpose is to till the Earth he has given to us (see Genesis 2:15). So any workplace, organisation, business, government or ministry whose work system doesn’t fulfil this agenda of God automatically sponsors the devil’s work – to steal, kill and destroy (see John 10:10). That is why God has no dealings with evil things.
The late Dr Myles Munroe once said, “When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable.” So if you know the Creator of work, then you’ll understand how to go about it.
But God’s love is so great. He has inspired His servants to even write to us about how to go about work. That is, to do it unto Him, and not merely unto human masters although they are there.
Authority figures in workplaces are for control and direction of vision, not for a show of pride and superiority over others.

Authority figures in workplaces are for control and direction of vision, not for a show of pride and superiority over others. And so, with this in view, we, children of God, must work with the Lord’s pleasing in our minds, regardless of the debased behaviour of others. But that’s not all.
If I work hard for my boss merely to please God and I don’t have any reward, what’s my labour for? God will be pleased with me, but isn’t there any inheritance or reward for me? The Bible says in Hebrews 6:10 NIV that,
“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”
He’s not a forgetful God who makes people serve Him without benefits. Beloved, there’s a sure inheritance for God’s servants including you, regardless of the vocation wherewith you’re called. That inheritance is in two folds – the Earthly ones and the heavenly ones.
For the earthly one, Jesus promised it in Matthew 19:29 NIV, which says,
“And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.”
As you make conscious sacrifices to obey God and serve Him wholeheartedly at where you are, Jesus says you’ll get whatever you lost in hundredfolds and inherit eternal life. But the inheritance in heaven reserved for us by God Himself is incorruptible, undefiled and unfadable (see 1 Peter 1:4).
For these reasons, rejoice in hope as you do what you’re called to do. Because of a truth, you’ll not lose your reward for serving Jesus, not at all.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the heavenly inheritance You’ve reserved for me, your servant (see 1 Peter 1:4). Today, I refuse to lose hope in my vocation. Keep remembering me that it’s You I’m serving, not myself or for any selfish ambitions. Amen!
