[7] “Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.” – Romans 13:7 (NIV)
Did you know that almost everybody on this Earth has debts to pay for? Maybe you are shocked to hear this, but that’s what the Bible says. In Romans 13:7, we are told to give to everyone what we owe them. However, the preceding words in the scripture didn’t state that “money” is the only thing to think about regarding debt! There is more to that!
According to Romans 13:7, a child of God can owe taxes, revenue, respect and honour. There is probably more to this list that Paul didn’t mention. But let us consider these, at least, for this devotional. As a business owner, the Bible tells us that paying taxes is a right thing to do. Even Jesus paid temple tax (see Matthew 17:27) and later said we should give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God (see Mark 12:17). In our case, Caesar refers to the government. It is wrong to evade tax if you are in business.
Then, when it comes to revenue, give to the one you owe. So, if someone does work for you, pay the person. Fathers, give your children money when they go to school; it’s your responsibility. Employers, pay your employees. Let us not be involved in cheating others for the work they do for us.
We should not forget to respect those in authority. Don’t let disrespect be your hallmark. Honour people, too, especially men of God. These are not things you do when you feel like doing it. No! It is a debt you must pay. Never forget this!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your immense love in my life. Help me to give to everyone what I owe them, be it revenue, honour, respect or love. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
