[18] Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; [19] but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.” — Mark 4:18 - 19 NIV
Today is Sunday, and probably thousands of people will go and sit in churches to hear God’s Word. But after all is said and done, how many people can testify that the Word they received is still in remembrance and bearing fruit in their lives?
You see, the devil knows the efficacy of the Word of God in a believer’s life. So he does his best to steal it from them, primarily through minute multiple distractions and sometimes sleeping in church during the preaching of the Word.
For some, he steals it by not making them understand the Word preached through distractions in giving full attention to its hearing (see Matthew 13:19). But to others, he brings issues to choke the Word in their heart. That is what is written in Mark 4:18-19. According to those Bible verses, there are three things that choke God’s Word in the heart of a believer.
- The worries of this life.
- The deceitfulness of wealth.
- The desires for other things.
These are dangerous things that keep happening to people every day. And as a result, they don’t see fast progression in their spiritual growth in the Lord.
How many times have you sat in church but always thought of what to do after church? What about conceiving business ideas upon reception of the Word, meanwhile, forgetting the Word itself preached?
We live in a world where everything is moving, including time. But God has called us to live on purpose. And that means fixing our gaze upon Him for everything. Don’t be deceived; God can take care of you perfectly. So stop worrying and keep receiving the Word of God. The Word will work for you.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for assuring me that You’ll care for me. I pray that the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and desires for other things won’t get in my way as I soak and nurture God’s Word in my heart. That, I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen!
