The Deceitfulness of Wealth

[22] “The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.” – Matthew 13:22 (NIV)

Did you know that wealth, although good, is deceitful? Many people think that all their financial problems will end after getting a good-paying job. But years into that job, they realise their pay is insufficient. Why? Money deceived them.

There are too many things that are not going well in this world. A lot of people are battling with fear and anxiety every day because a lot of bad things are happening daily in their lives. So, even though they struggle to attend church, their minds are plagued with life issues, making them unable to fully concentrate on hearing and understanding the Word so they can use it to profit their lives. To those people, Jesus described that the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the Word, making it unfruitful in their lives.

As a preacher, understand that your duty is to preach the Word. How the congregants will apply the Word depends on them, not you. So there’ll be variations in how fruitful the same people in the same church are doing with the same Word you preach. Fret not. Do your work and let people do what God wants them to do. But don’t let the quest to get rich and succeed early mess up your life so badly that you don’t give adequate time to assimilate and practice the Word.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, help me to be more fruitful with each Word I receive from You and Your servants. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
