God, in His infinite wisdom, has created every individual uniquely, which goes without saying that everyone is different and no two persons are equal, not even identical twins. Though they share the same DNA and even look alike physically, they have certain distinct features that distinguish them. And even more, it’s been scientifically proven that fingerprints vary from person to person. So you’re unique, whether you like it or not. For instance, consider the human body. Every organ in and outside it performs a specific function. The eye cannot do what the ears do, and vice versa. So, with this understanding in view, it’s clear that it is not necessary to compare your life to others. We’re going to delve deeper into this in this article, especially for believers in Christ. So, please read on.
2 Corinthians 10:12 says,
“But they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.”
Here are some truths you can remember yourself with when you get tempted to compare yourself to others.
#1 You are different
Jeremiah 1:5 says,
“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
That was the word of the Lord to Jeremiah, a Levite boy whose natural order was to become a priest. But the Word of the Lord to him was that he had been ordained a prophet to the nations. Beloved, even before you were born, God had plans exclusively for you. He called you to be different. Therefore, your race of faith is unique in Him. His calling does not follow the order of man. And as long as you are in Christ, you are set apart and marked with a seal – the seal of the Spirit (see Ephesians 1:13).
#2 See your difference among others as a compliment, not a competition
Competition sets in places where people struggle with their sense of identity or who they are. As you get to know your identity in Christ, seek also to understand what you have been called to do. Your walk of faith is unique and complements the body of Christ in totality.
We all have different experiences and unique perspectives of life which shape our individual personalities. All these personality differences are what God uses to enrich the ministry. Take the disciples, for example; they all had different backgrounds and personalities that were useful in their walk with Christ. There was no competition whatsoever. So beloved, don’t be intimidated by your difference but rather bask in it. For it is a compliment from God to you to help build the Church of Christ.
#3 Focus on delivering your assignment
Beloved, the focus is Christ. And where your mind is is where you’ll channel your energies. Therefore, when you are constantly comparing yourself with others, you lose your focus on your purpose fulfilment.
The importance of knowing one’s purpose in Christ cannot be overemphasised. It is through it we deliver our God-given assignments. It is imperative that we identify the many distractions in our lives in order to steer clear of them and stay grounded.
For instance, when you find yourself in a loving-godly relationship as a lady, you steer clear of many male friendships that may cause unhealthy friction in your life in order to focus on building that beautiful relationship with your beloved. It is, therefore, wise to dedicate your time and effort to fulfilling your purpose by channelling your energy towards knowing Christ and dwelling in Him at all times.
