Whenever a new year is about to start, several people write down new year resolutions and other things they want to change in their lives. Although most of those initiatives don’t work, some do. But many fail because they fail to adapt to the change they want. For example, deciding to do a personal Bible study with your family every Sunday is an excellent idea. But it will never happen by automation. You must put in the work, or else such an idea will remain dormant and not be implemented in your life. There is fresh grace from the Lord for you this year. But you must grasp it.
Evaluate your past
One way to make the most of what’s ahead of you in this new year is to evaluate your past. I am not saying that you should compare your life to others, but rather to yourself—who you are now and who you used to be. You may ask, why do I say this? Well, the Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:10 (NIV) that,
[10] Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?” For it is not wise to ask such questions.
From the verse above, it isn’t wise to say your past is better than your present. That means if you evaluate your past and compare it to your present and there’s a decline, then your level of wisdom has also declined. Why? It’s because you need more divine wisdom to move higher in life – in Christ. The more you know God, the more His grace multiplies in your life (see 2 Peter 1:2). When God’s grace abounds in your life, your quality of life will also improve.
Renew your commitment to the Lord
Your commitment to the Lord needs to be checked and improved upon this day going forward. Why? Because knowing God requires you to connect deeper with Him. Jesus said in John 17:3 (NKJV) that,
“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
Please read that again. The eternal life of Christ in you is all about knowing God and Jesus the Sent One. And as I have said before, the way to ascend in a higher knowledge of Christ is to increase your dedication unto Him, especially in increased time of fellowship with Him.
This year, have it at the back of your mind that you’ll create a Sabbath in your life to be with the Lord. By saying this, I’m referring to laying aside work for a considerable amount of time, especially on Sunday, just to be with the Lord. Let me tell you that work will never end, even the work of the ministry. So if you think you’ll always work, even on Sunday, I assure you, you will find work. But unfortunately, when you keep up with that lifestyle, your relationship with God will be neglected, and that won’t profit your life.
Adapt to God’s new season for you
Can I tell you something? Don’t embrace a new season in your life with an old mindset. As you’ve stepped into the new year, take your time to adapt your mindset and lifestyle to the way God wants you to live. And, of course, don’t skip church.
You are a blessing.
