“Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.” — Genesis 21:18 - 20 NIV
One common question unanswered in many people’s lives is, “Is there any assurance of better days ahead of me?” Many of us tend to face serious life issues daily that leave some depressed, discomforted, and to a higher degree, even battle with suicidal thoughts.
Hagar was an Egyptian slave in the house of Abraham. He had a child called Ishmael with her master. However, upon Sarah, his master’s wife’s request, she was sent away from the household.
Although Abraham gave her and the boy enough provisions when sending them away, they ran short of them. The woman was strong, but it got to a point the child was dying. Watching her son die in her hands was too painful for her. So she decided to leave the boy in one of the bushes, went very far from him, and began sobbing (Genesis 21:16).
God had already told Abraham that He’d make Ishmael into a nation. But I don’t think Abraham told Hagar about it. Even if he did, the death-threatening situation of the boy could have made her lose consciousness of it.
So in Genesis 21:17, God heard the boy crying; and decided to come to Ishmael’s rescue through the angel of the Lord’s instructions to Hagar. In verse 18, this angel of God told Hagar plainly that He’ll make Ishmael into a great nation. After that, He opened Hagar’s eyes to see a well of water as an exact provision of what the child needed.
Based on this happening, Hagar went to her son again and cared for him until he grew up and lived in the desert. What she heard saved the boy’s life.
Friend, only God can give you assurance of better days ahead because He knows the end from the beginning. Your issues aren’t strong enough to disannul His Word upon your life. You only need to do two things: hear His Word concerning your life and treasure the promises in your heart and mind. I tell you that He’ll never fail you.
You’re a blessing.
