Is Personal Branding Good or Bad for the Christian?

One question that has remained unaddressed in many believers’ minds is, “Is personal branding bad for the Christian?” That is because we live in a world where people are constantly seeking how to show people what they are gifted to do, whether business-wise or ministry-wise. Having this inner craving isn’t evil. But the question is, what’s your main intention behind those desires? Is it to prove to others that you’re relevant or to make a Christ-centred impact in the world differently aside from the normal?

Personal branding isn’t bad. In fact, in Christ, it’s necessary to do it if you want God’s gift in you to call for the attention of great people. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:16 (NKJV) that,

A man’s gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men.

Proverbs 18:16 NKJV

Your gift will create space in the midst of crowds for you, not yourself. However, without personal branding and lack of this gift development, it’ll remain either hidden in you or exposed to only a few people.

How Joseph teaches personal branding

Joseph was a man blessed with a life of purpose. He knew why God brought him on earth. Joseph took notice of the divine gifts in him, particularly dream interpretation. For this cause, he never trivialized the opportunity to help those who need those gifts, even in prison. He assisted two people by providing a solution to their disturbing dreams while in a dungeon out of injustice (Genesis 40:4-19).

A time came when Pharaoh needed Joseph’s dream interpretation gift. So when Pharaoh sent for him, Joseph decided to go. But before he went, he did something I term personal branding. That is, he shaved and changed his clothes.

So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh.

Genesis 41:14 NIV

Joseph understood that Pharaoh was a great man. His gift had made way for him despite the numerous magicians and wise men in Egypt at that time. But he knew that if he failed to present himself well, he’d lose that opportunity. Now here is where personal branding becomes a necessity.

No matter how gifted you are, if you don’t change your presentation from bad to your best when great people start to place demands on your divine gift, you’ll lose many opportunities. Making a global impact isn’t always about planning but your personal development. Dress well. Take care of yourself, both spiritually and physically. Check your character. Study the proper materials and don’t joke with your education. All these things are great necessities to possess if you want God to take you far in this life.

Nevertheless, remember that Christians don’t brand themselves like how unbelievers do. Everything you do to look good, both inwardly (an example is your character) and outwardly (an example is a decent dressing), is for the glorification of Christ, not to win people’s approval. Live unto God.
