Your Upbringing Should not Always Determine Your Adult Lifestyle

[11] “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” – 1 Corinthians 13:11 (KJV)

I have read Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) many times, which says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Almost every time I read it, I understood it as children continuing to live in the ways they learned from their parents. But it’s actually not true.

The scripture doesn’t say, “Train up a child in your way he should go: …”. No, it says, Train up a child in the way he should go: …”. That means when it comes to raising children, it’s not about your ideologies as a parent, but total guidance from the Bible. That is why it’s written in Ephesians 6:4 (KJV) that,

“And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

Also, in Deuteronomy 6:6-7, God told the Israelites to teach their children the words of the law. So, in essence, if you fail to raise your child in the fear of God, he has the authority to throw away many or even all the doctrines you taught him. Paul knew this. That’s why he said in 1 Corinthians 13:11 (KJV), “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”

That means, as a believer, your upbringing should not always determine your adult lifestyle. When Jesus becomes Lord over your life, you receive power to put away childish things as you pursue after maturity in the Spirit. I believe many people have lived a little of their potential because their parents gave them a shallow lifestyle mindset. Go beyond that. Follow after Jesus, and don’t be limited by the ideologies of your parents. For it is Jesus who has your destiny. He will make your life beautiful.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your effective leadership over my life. Help me to put away childish thoughts ingrained subtly in my mind as I pursue to fulfil my divine mandate. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
