Your Security Is Not in Your Position

[1] “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem [2] and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” [3] When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.” – Matthew 2:1-3 (NIV)

One of the many surprises I have encountered when reading the Bible was Herod being afraid of the newborn Jesus. I just don’t get it. If you are a nation president and a baby is born today and is prophesied that he’s coming to take your position, why should you be afraid? Shouldn’t you rejoice that you’ve got a successor? After all, doesn’t it take many years to raise a child to a high leadership level? But the Bible says when Herod heard of Jesus’ birth, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. Jesus’ birth threatened Herod’s security in his position, which shouldn’t be so.

As a leader, your security is not in your position. In essence, as you age, you must plan and make way for your successor and not be threatened by the incoming younger people who are more energetic and fresh in ideas. God is a generational God. So He thinks of generations whenever He begins something through someone. For what He has started with you to have a transgenerational impact, succession is crucial.

Avoid threatening the lives of people who are new to your field of work or new in your organisation just because they are young or ignorant. Learn to embrace change and invest in pouring your vision into them. That way, when your successor is ready to take your position, he’ll not divert the corporation’s vision.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for placing me where I am. Teach me to train people under me so that I can help them up. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
